BatteryBridge

Charge limits on your terms, within your hardware’s limits. Set a laptop charge limit and battery-care schedule where your hardware allows it, and see exactly which controls your device supports.

What it looks like

batterybridge capabilities
batterybridge limit 80 --start 75

Commands from the project documentation. capabilities reports each feature as supported, experimental, unsupported or unknown, with the reason; the output depends on your device, so none is shown here. There is no published screenshot of the current app yet.

What it does

Many laptops spend the whole day on the charger at 100%. BatteryBridge sets a charge limit through the charge-control interface your laptop exposes, keeps it applied with a background service, and tells you plainly when a feature is unsupported or unverified on your device.

Who it is for

  • Laptop owners who keep the machine on a charger most of the day.
  • Linux users whose kernel exposes charge thresholds and who want a GUI and schedules on top.
  • People who want to know what their hardware supports before trusting a charging tool.

Limitations

  • No completed device-level write validation is recorded yet. Treat charge control as experimental and watch the first charge cycle.
  • Available controls depend on the kernel driver, firmware and vendor interface. ASUS, Dell, HP, MSI and Acer controllers are not implemented yet.
  • macOS and Windows installers are unsigned. Linux packages require systemd and native OpenGL/EGL libraries.

Typical uses

Hold the battery at 80%

Set a limit, optionally with a start threshold, and the service keeps it after restarts.

Top up before a trip

Charge to 100% temporarily, then return to the saved limit automatically.

Check compatibility first

Run a read-only capability check or export a compatibility report without installing the service.

Verify a download

SHA256SUMS.txt lists SHA-256 hashes for the release files. A matching hash shows that your file is identical to the one uploaded with the release. It is a checksum, not a signature from the author: it does not prove who built the file.

shasum -a 256 -c --ignore-missing SHA256SUMS.txt

First run

  1. Install the package for your system and approve the administrator prompt. The installer starts the background service.

  2. Open BatteryBridge and check Device capabilities to see what your laptop supports.

  3. Set Stop charging at, for example 80%, and press Apply limit.

  4. Without installing anything, you can build the CLI and inspect your device read-only:

    cargo build --release --locked
    ./target/release/batterybridge capabilities

Platforms and how they were checked

  • Linux (kernel charge thresholds)Builds and passes automated checks in CI

Generic sysfs charge_control_end_threshold support; no vendor restriction. Device-level validation reports are not yet recorded.

  • macOS 11+ (Intel and Apple Silicon)Builds and passes automated checks in CI

Battery monitoring through IOKit. SMC charge control is experimental; some models may be monitoring-only.

  • Windows 10/11Builds and passes automated checks in CI

Battery monitoring. Charge control only for Lenovo conservation mode (fixed 80%), experimental.
